Chinese hibiscus, also known as Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, is a perennial plant from the mallow family (Malvaceae). It is widely cultivated for its beautiful, large flowers and is commonly used as an ornamental hedge in tropical and subtropical areas around the world. Its origins are still debated, but it is believed to have originated in Southeast Asia or possibly in Vanuatu or other tropical regions. Currently, there are no known wild populations of this plant.

The Chinese hibiscus is a classified as a shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 1.2-3 meters (4-10 feet) and widths of 1.5-2.4 meters (5-8 feet). Its evergreen leaves are typically unlobed with serrated margins, measuring 5-12 cm (2-5 inches) in length and 3-8.5 cm (1-3 inches) in width, and a vibrant green color. Stem cuttings are the most common method for propagating these plants. The funnel-shaped flowers of the Chinese hibiscus are typically red, but certain cultivars produce pink, orange, yellow, or white blooms. These flowers consist of 4-5 petals with showy stamens that are fused together around the pistil, with a green epicalyx surrounding the base of the petals.
